Proverbs Challenge – Chapter 4

Security in Wisdom

Hear, my children, the instruction of a father,
And give attention to know understanding;
For I give you good doctrine:
Do not forsake my law.
When I was my father’s son,
Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother,
He also taught me, and said to me:
“Let your heart retain my words;
Keep my commands, and live.
Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.
Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.
Exalt her, and she will promote you;
She will bring you honor, when you embrace her.
She will place on your head an ornament of grace;
A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings,
And the years of your life will be many.
11 I have taught you in the way of wisdom;
I have led you in right paths.
12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered,
And when you run, you will not stumble.
13 Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go;
Keep her, for she is your life.

14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,
And do not walk in the way of evil.
15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;
Turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they do not sleep unless they have done evil;
And their sleep is [a]taken away unless they make someone fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness,
And drink the wine of violence.

18 But the path of the just is like the shining [b]sun,
That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know what makes them stumble.

20 My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes;
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them,
And health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.
24 Put away from you a [c]deceitful mouth,
And put perverse lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.

    It tells us to practice equality among ourselves, be obedient for it has a reward, be a good learner (understanding) it also say that worldly things should not entice us that much to the state of committing sin (greedy) we should way in a clean and holy way and dispose all that could lead one astray . God knowledge is the one thing that can lead one and won’t go astray , ones you allow God in our lives everything will fall in place at the right time.

    Individual has to submit himself or herself for listening well so as to be full of details then wisdom can be acquired.
    The fear of God indeed is the beginning of wisdom..

  5. Adefuwa Adedokunola Emmanuel

    It is important to seek for God’s wisdom because it’s the only way to perfect our paths in all ramifications.

  6. Imion Angela Ofure

    Verse 1 and 2 expained: Solomon has taken God’s law and made it his own by faith and obedience, as well as teaching. The wisdom of these words is available to those who, first of all, understand the rich value (treasure), that wisdom possesses. Appropriating wisdom begins when one values it above all else.
    Once wisdom is properly valued, both the ear and mind are captivated by it. The “heart” commonly refers to the mind as the center of thinking and reason, but also includes the emotions, the will and thus, the whole inner being. The heart is the depository of all wisdom and the source of whatever effects speech, sight and conduct.

    Verse 3 shows the passionate pleading on one who is desperate to know and apply the truth of God. The least bit of indifference will leave one bereft of the fullness of wisdom.

    The first 5 scriptures are in form of a prayer. In fact, it is what we should all pray for. For a person to really be able to live a Godly life, you must first know what God expects. This first sentence says “receive my words”. The heart is the place for the commandments and the Word of God to be hidden. If we receive into our being the wisdom of God and apply it to our heart we will do the things that are right in God’s sight.

    The overarching theme of Proverbs chapter 2 is the relationship between virtue and discernment. As described here, virtuous living is moral living. As a person strives to live a moral life, he or she develops a greater ability to discern right from wrong. Further, beyond simple matters of right and wrong, as virtue grows within a person, he or she becomes more proficient at discerning trickier situations. Real life predicaments often present two or more seemingly valid options. Discernment, then, also includes determining which of many different options is actually best. Likewise, many life situations appear to offer only a variety of bad options. There, discernment is once again required, to determine which option presents the correct choice, or to recognize where a ”good” option has been hidden.

  8. Akinbobola Esther

    Proverbs 2 is full of rewards of wisdom
    1)Every true child of God must treasure wisdom and apply it to their ways with studying the Words of God
    2) Seeking God as silver make one to understand the Fear of God and find His Knowledge and his shield is over the Saint hmmmm what a privilege to seek God all the days of one’s life
    3)verse 13tells us the dangers in waking out of God Grace and 18 let us Know going astray from Christ is Death
    4)verse 21 and 22,is telling us to choose the part that can favour u and i.hmmmmm,may we choose well IJN

  9. Gbadebo omotolani Esther

    Once we allow God reign in our life’s and ask for intensive wisdom everything else will come in an easy way without stress

  10. Gbadebo Toluwalope

    This chapter tells us that we can only fear the lord and obey his words of we have understanding and knowledge of his words. It’s not enough to ask, you have to incline your heart towards it
    Then it says there are lots of rewards for having understanding and using it in our day to day activities. Having understanding of what God wants from you would keep you away from falling into Temptation

  11. Imion immaculate osereme

    The “her” referred to here in this passage is sin. Sin is like a cage. It cages us from God and make our path messed up. He who is seduces or agrees to be seduced by the “seductress”,”sin”,will never regain the path of life. So,as christians,we should always make our path straight and live our lives with the zeal to always walk in the path the pleases God so that we will be righteous for God loves the righteous.

  12. Balogun Feranmi

    If we act according to the will of God, we will know His plans for us. He will also light our path. May God help u. Amen

  13. Imion immaculate osereme

    In verse 1 of the chapter 3,it says we shouldn’t forget the laws and commandments of God so that we will live long in peace.
    We should always put our trust in God but not man cos man will fail us. But when we put our trust in God,he will never disappoint us,he keeps to his promises. We just have to be patient cos only Him knows when the time is right.
    Sometimes,we complain when we are going through some difficulties,saying God has forsaken or deserted us but no,he hasn’t,he has great plans for us and that will only manifest to reality when we are patient and let him do his work.
    It also says we should always be wise in all our doing,for through that,we shall receive glory. We should never be jealous when we see others progressing for our time to give thanks will come too.

  14. Akinsehinwa Queen

    Proverb Chapter 1:The purpose of the book of proverb is to recognise wise instructions and apply knowledge wisely and to do this we must have the fear of God.
    This chapter is just a replica of Solomon’s life.
    Its about obeying instructions, doing what is right, getting wisdom,justice,judgement and equity according to verse 3 of the chapter. He was wise but follow foolish desires. May God help us to recognise wise instructions and be able to apply knowledge with it.. Amen

    1. Odogun Oluwaseun Morrison

      The chapter ends with another set of instructions. These are focused on relationships, especially with other people. Among these are commands not to delay in doing good for others, especially when such honor is expected or owed. This passage touches on the fact that the ungodly often seem to have success—but this is nothing to envy. Even those who seem to prosper in their sin will eventually be held accountable to God. Those who are arrogant and foolish will one day be humiliated and disgraced; those who submit to godly wisdom will be blessed

  15. Imion Angela Ofure

    Proverbs chapter 3 is God’s speech to us his children. He is telling us to follow in his ways, trust in Him, pursue Wisdom, and treat others properly. He is also telling us not to envy the lawless because God gives them what they deserve.

    Day 1:Proverb1:1-7 Talk about respect for God and have the fear of God and also reject the foolish ways
    Proverb 1:8-19 is a warning against foolishness and the allure of sinful behavior, Solomon begins this warning by appealing to his children to honor their parents teaching. As we are as parents know it is helpful to outline negative behavior before stating when one engage in it
    Proverb 1:20-33 This passage talks about consequences of the behaviors defined in the previous section. Solomon describes wisdom as a beautiful woman shouting out for others to hear, this means wisdom is not hiding, it is out in the open for all to hear.

  18. Prophetess Deborah Oreofe David

    Day 2: Proverb 2 The whole passage is telling us to strive after wisdom and listen to words of wisdom, and seek the it like gold and silver, then you will develop the fear of God. God says the speaker is the one who dispenses wisdom storing it up for good people and helping guide the righteous and just.

    Our God is a righteous One……… He has an everlasting promise for us only if we obey Him and also put trust in Him. He will do good unto us

    Proverb chapter 3:1-20This is where Solomon instructs that wisdom is rooted in sound teaching and we should put our trust in God and He’s going to reward those who obey while wisdom demands chastening, it brings profound benefit and its importance is clear since it under guided God’s creation. Proverb 3:21-22 made us to understand that true wisdom belongs to God, God will give us wisdom if we seek it prayerfully. Proverb chapter 3:23 If we remain in the wisdom that God has provided for us in His son,esus christ,we shall be able to walk in His way and not stumble.Proverb chapter 3:24:If we remain in the wisdom that the Lord has given us there is no fear of death Death of the body would just transform us into that heavenly place with Jesus, there is no fear for the Christian with faith. We should be eager to help those less fortunate. Proverb 3:29 One of the most important things God wants us to do is love thy neighbour as thyself. Proverb 3:30 We should not live in strife and fussing ,but we should learn to live peacefully with all men If we live for the Lord, we have been promised that even our enemies will be at peace with us,this does not say that there is never a time for strife .If your enemy attacks you,you may defend yourself but you must start strife nor keep it going. Proverb 3:31 We must never choose the way of the oppressor.We must not even fellowship with those who choose to oppress others,Evil and good are like oil and water,they can not mix.Proverb 3:32 ”Froward” means perverted or wicked.The wicked will not know the secret,because they will not see and hearing, they will not hear,they (the wicked) will not understand the things of God, the secret that the righteous know is that Jesus Christ is their Savior, God reveals Himself to those who love Him.Proverb 3:33 God promises blessings to those who follow in God’s commandments and curses to those who do not follow in the ways of God. Proverb 3:34 Those who rejects the teaching of the Lord are rejected themselves by Him.proverb 3:35 The wise seek God,those who seek God inherit glory. The glory of the only begotten Son is shared with those who live for God.

  25. Odogun Oluwaseun Morrison

    This chapter ends with a series of instructions on how to avoid straying into this path of the wicked. Emphasis here is on being deliberate, thoughtful, and careful. Much of the language used involves this concept of paying attention, rather than being careless. Similarly, a person’s words and speech should be focused and direct, not manipulative or deceptive. It’s notable that Scripture warns against turning from the path of wisdom, regardless of which direction one goes. “Do not swerve to the right or to the left” implies that God’s wisdom is already perfect. We can’t improve on it, nor can we “do better,” even if we’re convinced our direction is right

  26. Imion immaculate osereme

    Proverb 5
    This chapter clearly tells us that we should abstain from sexual temptations and be contempted what we have.

  33. Odogun Oluwaseun Morrison

    Proverbs Chapter 1 is clearly born out of Solomon’s life history. Solomon held himself back from no earthly pleasure, he had everything he could ever desire, and in the end he saw the foolishness of his actions. Chapter 1 is Solomon’s reflection on his own life, how he had all the wisdom of God available to him, and yet chose to follow after foolish desires.

  34. Imion immaculate osereme

    Proverbs chapter 1 is telling us to run away from temptation. Sin is very enticing. We can only overcome sin when we are strong in our christian life. So,we should try as much as possible not to give in to sin so that we will not end up in hell on the last day
