Proverbs Challenge – Chapter 9

The Way of Wisdom

Wisdom has built her house,
She has hewn out her seven pillars;
She has slaughtered her meat,
She has mixed her wine,
She has also [a]furnished her table.
She has sent out her maidens,
She cries out from the highest places of the city,
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
“Come, eat of my bread
And drink of the wine I have mixed.
Forsake foolishness and live,
And go in the way of understanding.

“He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself,
And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.
Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you;
Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

The Way of Folly

13 A foolish woman is [b]clamorous;
She is simple, and knows nothing.
14 For she sits at the door of her house,
On a seat by the highest places of the city,
15 To call to those who pass by,
Who go straight on their way:
16 “Whoever is [c]simple, let him turn in here”;
And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
17 “Stolen water is sweet,
And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
18 But he does not know that the dead are there,
That her guests are in the depths of [d]hell.

    Wisdom and Folly are portrayed in this chapter as rival young women, each preparing a feast and inviting people to it. But Wisdom is a responsible woman of character, while Folly is a prostitute serving stolen food. Wisdom appeals to the mind; Folly to the senses. It is easier to excite the senses, but the pleasures of Folly are temporary. By contrast, the satisfaction that Wisdom brings lasts forever

  2. Odogun Oluwaseun Morrison

    This chapter 9 notes the different reactions mankind has to godly wisdom. Those who sincerely seek truth respond to correction with humility and love. They apply the lessons of wisdom to make themselves wiser. In contrast, those who are arrogant will sneer at godliness, and react with hatred and insults to those who correct them. This passage repeats the fundamental idea that true wisdom can only begin when a person properly respects and reveres God.

  5. Imion Angela Ofure

    The chapter can be divided into three sections, each with six verses. The first continues to represent Lady Wisdom, the second contrasts the responses mankind has to wisdom, and the last section presents foolishness as an opposite of Wisdom herself. The chapter also reveals that only a fool would say there is no God. We are to turn from our foolish ways, so that we might have eternal life. To go in the way of understanding, is to accept the Lord Jesus as our personal Lord and saviour.

    Chapter 7: The lord is urging us in this chapter to accept wisdom and and make wisdom our right hand in life. When we are wise, it will be easy for us to abstain form some kind of people we ought not to be found with, people that can lead us astray.
    Not every one that comes or that we meet in life wish us well.
    This chapter also made us understand that we need to run away from temptation or people that can tempt us be it Man or woman.

    Proverb 8: This chapter made us understand that the reason we do evil things ot sin against our Gid is because we do not fear Him, there is no how you will have fear of God and wish your neighbour bad.
    Verse 8: all the words of my mouth are righteous, there is nothing forward or perceive in them. Lets ask ourselves this question that are words of my mouth righteous to God and to man?
    This is a rhetorical question for us.

    Chapter 9
    It indicates that how to know the right path, that is knowing the right from wrong. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, before taking any step in life, always apply wisdom

  14. Merayebu Joy Omowunmi

    llars:”

    The first thing we must look at here is the “house”. The wise person (Christian), is building a house. The significance of “her seven pillars”, is to convey the sufficiency of this house as full in size and fit for a banquet.

    This is a spiritual house that we read about (in 1 Peter 2:5).

    “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”

    We can read a great deal about the Christian being God’s house (in chapter 3 of Hebrews). It would be good to read from (verse 1 through 6). I will just quote (verse 6 here),

    Hebrews 3:6 “But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”

    In Revelation 21:3, we see that the tabernacle of God is with men. God is our house, and we are His. These “seven pillars” are similar to the seven pillars in the temple in Jerusalem. “Seven” means spiritually complete, and we see the perfection that God will build His house.
    We also see seven churches in Revelation which are symbolic of all Christendom. We also see the seven gifts of the Spirit which supports the church.

  15. Odedairo Oladele Omotayo

    Wisdom has built her house. She says, “Come, leave your folly.” The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Folly knows nothing.
    Proverbs chapter 9 comparison contrast wisdom and folly. Saying that folly knows nothing and wisdom is supreme, Proverbs chapter 9 offers a comparison and contrast between the two. In His characteristic style of antithetic comparison and contrast, the Lord Loving me shows his precious children that they are important to him, and that it is best to do His will bye embracing wisdom rather than folly or sin. Though we send for human beings are fleshy by Nature because of sin, and we struggle with sin because of the weakness of our flesh, the wickedness of the world and Temptation from the Devil, we need the Lord’s help to deal with sin because of Temptation. As a result, no sinful human being can avoid acknowledgement of their need for God’s forgiveness to Jesus death on the cross!
