A Lesson From Leah!

“When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, “The LORD has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.” Then she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon. She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi. And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Now I will praise the LORD.” Therefore, she called his name Judah. Then she stopped bearing.”

Memory verse: “My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding,”Proverbs 5:1

We all learn everyday but what we lean is dependent on a few factors such as our area of interest, source of information, our immediate environment and those we surround ourselves with, to mention a few. Children learn in a very interesting way because not only do they do as you say, they particularly do as you do which means a lot of what parents do have a major impact in how their children are being shaped and that together with the environment they are brought up in completely affects their formation.

The bible tells us in Romans 10:17 that “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” And we also see an example of faith in the life of the disciples who though may look like they were not learning much at the time Jesus was here due to their various questions but soon as Jesus ascended into heaven, they began to manifest through the power through the impartation of the Holyspirit. They started exhibiting all they had learnt from Jesus. Subconsciously or otherwise, all they were doing was constantly hearing and hearing the word of God when Jesus was on earth and this gave them a platform to build on when he was gone to be with the Father in heaven.

What is your source of learning?

Today we examine the story of a woman God favored in the bible called Leah. Whiles we probably all know the story of Jacob, Leah & Racheal, it’s easy to understand why her husband did not love her the way he loved Rachel.

Leah spent most of her marriage trying to please her husband so she completely was blinded and could not see the evidence of the love of God. Though Leah did nothing special to warrant the privileges she was getting, God was fighting for her all the way and in Genesis 29:31 we see that “When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.”

She initially had sons for her husband but with all those, her focus was on trying to gain Jacobs love and not until she had the fourth son, Judah did she appreciate God and say “Now I will praise the Lord”.

Where is God at the centre of your life? How many times do we focus so much on what we expect from other people and ignore God because we cannot physically see what He is doing? Most times we are blinded by what we want so much that God becomes secondary like in the life of Leah.

God is able to give rest to your troubled mind amidst all the trouble of life. You may not even get that which you want but you will just have peace within you. The bible never recorded that Jacob ever loved Leah like he loved Rachel so it wouldn’t have mattered if Leah bore him 7 children. She still couldn’t earn that which she really wanted from Jacob.

Learning from word of God gives us a deeper understanding of who God is and it helps us to understand His bigger purpose for our lives. Leah was even made the envy of her sister according to Genesis 30:1 but she still did not see it because she was not looking at the power of God in her life.

Look away from the distraction and you will see that God is always there for you “always”. Focus on God, not the world!
