Can You Hear Him?

“For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,”

Memory verse: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” John 10:27.

One of the most repeated topics in churches is about hearing from God. While some can undoubtedly tell you they know when God is speaking to them, some others remain unsure about how God speaks to them; hence you hear them ask the question “How will I know God is speaking to me?”

The bible is full of various instances where God speaks to His children and more interestingly, the people referenced in the bible may never have heard from God before but when they do, they are certain it is God speaking. They know His voice.

Abraham and Paul are two great people who knew God’s voice. They knew when He was speaking immediately they heard His voice. “Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.” Genesis 12:1. “And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” Acts 9:5.

These two individuals knew it was definitely Gods speaking. Abraham didn’t even bother questioning God the Father, He just followed the instructions but Saul knew it was the Lord, despite that, he wanted more and in both instances God did what He always does – He kept communicating and showed himself.

Today’s bible verse tells us that God speaks in various way and while we read that God spoke to Abraham, we don’t know if it was vocal initially but we know that Abraham understood and knew these instructions were from God.

Growing up, my mother had various ways she spoke and interestingly sometimes she looked at me and I just understood what she meant without speaking the world; our Heavenly Father is exactly the same. He speaks and is always speaking to us but we need a relationship to understand when He speaks. Even when the whole world doesn’t understand, we do because we know Him.

The only key to hearing God speak is to spend enough times knowing Him. If you still don’t know how God speaks to you then maybe you are not spending quality time with him and getting to know Him.

if you are truly His then you will hear His voice even when so many people are speaking out loud and there are distractions around you.
