Becoming An Overcomer!

Text: 1 John 5:1-5 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.  For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Memory Verse: These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 16:33.

Most times in life, we seek solutions to problems facing us and as a result of those life’s challenges, we begin to go from point A to B to Z with little or no understanding that we already have those solutions we seek.

Naturally, we come across individuals who have been through really difficult phases in life and when they tell their story, they tell you of various places and people they have visited to seek support. The result sometimes ends in disappointment and such people often left worse than where they started. This is because both themselves and their intermediaries do not understand the secret of becoming a permanent overcomer.

A few times in the bible we see the children of Israel approach Moses for one thing or another during their journey through the wilderness. For everything they wanted and went to Moses for, the Lord gave Moses a solution for the people but in all of His provisions and answers to their request, the people of Israel never really understood or knew God hence when they expected Moses back from, he mountain and didn’t see him, they managed to convince Aaron to build them a golden idol to worship. “And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a moulded calf. Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Exodus 32:4.

The lack of understanding of the Israelites meant that they could not fully overcome slavery. Though the Lord intended on taking them from Egypt to the promise land, they did not fully make it there; “Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the Lord”, Numbers 32:11-12.

Overcoming doesn’t happen by accident or by chance and a temporary fix doesn’t mean we have overcome but can happen only if we remain focused, steadfast and hold firm to our faith. The journey to overcoming requires full dependency on God always for direction and strength. This helps toward fulfilling the plan that He has for our lives. There will be lots of challenges, but we can only be said to be overcomers if we depend on the power of the Holy spirit and endure till the end.
