“Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him.”
Memory Verse:, Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13.
Many times, we see or hear of hundreds and thousands of people attending places of worship and whiles everyone has their personal reason for being present, there is something everyone has in common; they all pray in the name of Jesus. While almost everyone can quote the scripture according to John 16:23, not everyone understands that praying in the name of Jesus is the password to receiving form the father and not the password for inheriting the kingdom.
There are so many reasons for worshiping, some do because they grew up in a devoted family were constant worship and fellowship was in scope and attending church activities wasn’t an option. This for a long time have formed part of their general activities. For some, it’s as a result of genuine love the Lord and the desire to associate; while others do because they want to receive as they know the word of God in Hebrews 11:6 which reads “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
Why do you worship God?
Christianity is a journey to eternity! Serving, worshipping, devoting time to the things of God and loving your neighbour are the only things that gets us closer to the kingdom of God. Those things are almost a fast track towards heaven but without love, every other sacrifice we pay will be rewarded but not with entrance to the kingdom of Heaven.
The word of God comes with clarity, no complications because God desires that we have a clear understanding of the word, but we have a choice to walk with Him, seeking the understanding emitted from His word or to trail our own path relying on our own understanding. He encourages us to choose the former. It is important to remember that what we do is driven by what we believe and what we intend to achieve.
If the main focus of our walk with Christ is to be with Him in eternity then we could be one step closer if we love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength.’ and ‘love our neighbours as ourselves.’
