What Can Worry Do?

Friday, January 24, 2020

Text: Matthew 6:25-27   “This is why I tell you not to be worried about the food and drink you need in order to stay alive, or about clothes for your body. After all, isn’t life worth more than food? And isn’t the body worth more than clothes? Look at the birds: they do not sow seeds, gather a harvest and put it in barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren’t you worth much more than birds? Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?” Read Matthew 6:25-31

Memory Verse:  Proverbs 12:25, “Worry can rob you of happiness, but kind words will cheer you up.”

Over the years, the devil has continued to reuse many of his old tricks to scar the heart of believers. God remains faithful to His promises but it remains a natural training curve for us His creation to experience trying times. Unfortunately, the current situations faced by many of us makes it almost impossible not to fall for those devilish tricks and those vulnerabilities, places us in positions where the devil takes u for a ride, in other words he exploits our vulnerabilities.

Most of the time, what we worry about are things we have been waiting on God for. After our own expected time has passed or supposed peaceful and hopeful season wears out, we start to worry and sometimes even loose hope. Definitely we are human beings and its natural for our hearts to get weak when hope defers, but because the devil is constantly roaming around waiting for that time to come so he can simply attack, we need to be wise to renew our strength in God and cast worry aside. At those times of weakness, if we are not careful and remain very strong believer in Christ, will regress really badly.

We are human beings and we respond to situations with emotions of which worry is one of them. While it’s impossible not to worry at all, in any situation it’s important to remember that worry will never fix a thing.

In today’s bible text, we are privileged to see one of Jesus’ teachings again but His focus was on what we generally worry about as human beings, our day to day needs. Food, drink, clothes are the most basic things we worry about but some people even have the ability to worry about things that does not exist. They bring the future into their present and worry ahead of the future and again Jesus addresses this, Matthew 6:34.

Your worry about things can do no change to the situations, it instead gives the devil an opening to gain access into your life. Right from the very start, we see that Eve got to a state of worry after having conversations with the serpent. She worried about the future and decided to find a short cut Genesis 3:6. Sarah worried and gave her maid Hagar to her husband to bear for him what she assumed was God’s promise of a son, Genesis 16:1-4.

Situations is life will come and go and sometimes what you do when you are in the right frame of mind goes a long way in determining how you will handle tough times. Saturate yourself with the word of God now so you can keep depending on His word even when difficult time comes.

Joseph was a man who walked with God everyday oh his life. When difficult times surfaced which could have triggered his worry capability, he rechanneled that energy towards depending on God, he waited for God’s appointed time and did not seek any shortcuts. Read Genesis 39. He didn’t do this by his own power, he built himself up to that point of relationship with God and even though he would have had a moment of worry, he didn’t let it take hold of him, he refocused on God and stayed strong.

What’s your mind saying to you as you wait on the Lord? Remember God is able and would never fail. Don’t you dare give up and neither should you give in. Through His grace, I have found out it’s easier to dwell on God’s word and stand on His promises than worry. If you get know God and draw closer to Him as like a child to a Father, then it will become more evident to you that He always has your best interest at heart Jeremiah 29:11.
