Do Everything In The Name Of The Lord!

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Memory Verse:  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17

While growing up, I use to wonder why my mum was really stress free about everything which stresses people out, calming in the midst of stormy situations, eventually I realised it was because she included God in everything relating to anything and trusted God totally. Practically God was the forefront in things like waking up, eating, going shopping in the market, going to school and the rest alike. In my little mind I use to think why must we bother God with really unimportant things? Can’t we just involve Him in serious matters relating to health, praying for an opportunity, desperate situations and whatnot? But in the process of growing up and building my personal relationship with Him, I started understanding that God is interested and inclined in everything and nothing should be done without God.

Reflecting on yesterday’s devotional, It’s interesting that David a little boy fought Goliath in the name of God, he wrote in Psalm 5:3 that “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.” and in Psalm 121:1-2 said “I will lift up my eyes to the hills From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”. The consistency in David’s life showed that His everyday life was dependent on God not just the battles of life like the one he fought with Goliath. David spent his morning speaking to God and his day waiting on God and walking in God’s direction. He was in the habit of committing his day unto Gods hand so when in need of help or when something unexpected comes up, he went back to the one he had committed his day unto; God!

Starting a life of dependency on God might commence with you being confused because unlike man, we cannot see God therefore sometime we pick up our phones when in trouble instead of going on our knees of just talking to God. Even at times at the start the day we pick up our phones to check our diaries assuming that will be our tour guide, and decider on how the day will go but the more we depend on human, the more we draw away from God and downplay His role in our lives. When we are in distress, anyone encouraging us has a limitation to how much knowledge God releases to them and unless we have spoken to God first and He directs our paths towards speaking to someone he has chosen or sent our way, we may find out that even the conversation will yield 0% peace.

There is no competition with between God and ourselves as no amount of our own desires can lead to peace. We are often driven by the things of the word and engrossed in our desires that sometimes we don’t bother looking at the bigger picture. Even in situations where we see the bigger picture, we may not see anything promising but God is the only one who knows the end from the beginning and gives the ability to see end to end. Therefore, if we approach any area of our lives like goliath did, we cannot attain victory or achieve God’s own purpose for our lives. Remember Goliath trusted in his weight, size and abilities, God was absolutely out of the picture.

Goliath was a trained warrior and the best therefore he had everything he needed to retain the championship position in in battles yet to be fought but goliath did not have God.

When God is missing in any area of our lives, we can only continue in our own human effort but when we commit all to God’s hands we are opening up ourselves to the direction of the Holyspirit. The intervention of the Holyspirit means that though it may be tough but the end result will definitely be worthwhile according to God’s plan which we know is always good Jeremiah 29:11.

We are not to be like Goliath depending on our skills and strength, we are to be like David who committed everything to the hands of God. Both David and Goliath were warriors but there was a difference with David because it was more of God and less of him, therefore God was the director of everything in His life.

Commit your ways to the Lord and look up trusting that He will guide you in His own ways. Isaiah 55:8-9
