Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.
Memory Verse: Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 1Timothy 6:18
Many times, we live in a world of our own where the mind processes things non-stop and as a result we assume that things ought to work a certain way. Often those assumptions are shaped by the families we were born into and how things have evolved with regards to culture, families, friends and other people that may have influenced our thinking and attitude.
One of such thinking is that people are supposed to know when to do things, when not to our often the failure to realize that what seem normal to us may seem abnormal to others often leads to conflicts even amongst the closet of friends.
Being reborn into the family of Christ however means that ideally most Christians should think similarly because the bible and the holy spirit are our guide to living as a children of God. There are no contradictions between the leading of the Holy spirit and what’s written in the bible and as such we see that in the fact that the commandments given by God through Moses to the Israelites on their journey to the promise land being ten in number, Exodus 20:1-17 and Jesus summarizing all those ten commandment into two Matthew 22:37-40, they all still mean exactly the same.
Doing good may come to some naturally but to others this is quite a task and while we may be questioning the level of God’s interest in how we behave and deal with things in our daily lives, the bible is clear on the fact that God is interested in every little details of our life and is constantly watching how we live. His word to the people of Judah and Jerusalem addressed a lot of their current way of life and how they responded to the word of God.
They compromised a lot and did not behave in a way that was pleasing to God but they particularly focused on ceremonies and religious activities but failed to carry out important duties that they should.
Christians are expected to “Learn” to do good. The emphases on the word learn is because doing good does not come naturally and the mind operates on a very selfish level. Like the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21, our first response to most situation is to keep storing and storing but the bible tells us we have to learn. Yes, learn like we intentionally learn to adapt various things into our lives. Doing good should not have to be something that a Christian contemplates as we see Jesus gives us clear illustration of how we will be judged according to Matthew 25: 31-46, the king said “when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!”.
Ceremonial events, religious activities and all of that are not bad but if we are neglecting the core values of Christianity which entails “Doing good” then we may just be no different from the unbelievers. IF you are still struggling with doing good, I urge you to speak to God about it and be determined to intentionally make it a part of your everyday life until doing good becomes a part of who you are.
God is not interested in sacrifice and offerings, He is more interested in an humble spirit, Psalm 51:16-17.
