How Can I Cleanse My Ways?

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.

Memory Verse: The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But the prayer of the upright is His delight. Proverbs 15:8

The Bible is such a magnificent book loaded with answers to every single question in life. Even the most difficult questions we struggle with in life already has answers in the scriptures ready for our use but often we find that out that because God is not the first person we approach with everything in life, we miss out on the answers. We always seem to be quick to take the opinion of others on board before thinking of approaching God. At times, we don’t even open the word of God at all to see what the mind of God is about that particular issue and at such we completely miss the way and unnecessarily extend our own journey in life. Our attitude of not seeking God first through his word transforms something that should be very simple into a rollercoaster of worries for us, it creates a wilderness which makes it seem there is no way out.

The word of God is relevant today as it has been for over 200 years and we see this in the consistency of the word. The bible is our only source, that answer to every question that is vitally important to us in this life and the life to come. Today’s bible reading is written in the old testament, a time when people still lived under the laws as released unto Mosses but the Lord was clear then on how we should go about things, just as He is still clear today. The psalmist was concerned about holiness and walking right in the sight of God and looking at it, he had a very direct question with a naturally simple answer but why was he still interested in knowing?

Here we see the psalmist who was like the leper in Mark 1:40-41. He was in a state of uncleanliness and wanted to have a right standing with God hence he asked the question. The writer already acknowledged that his sin will always be before him (admission) and he needed to leave his sinful life behind (urgency) in order to progress to building a solid relationship with God (desire) therefore he was asking a practical question.

The practical answer to the question is “taking heed according to the word of God”. The response shows continuity in behavior meaning an individual who desires this must continue to live in line with God’s desires as he expressed in His word. In simple English the bible is our map to living right with God.

The bible is a map that guides our daily lives. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Psalm 119:105. We must carefully study our map daily not only at the start of our day but at every opportunity to ensure we carefully keeping track and on the right path as directed. This will ensure that we will only move our feet in the directions that His word orders us to. There is still the tendency to go astray if we fail to study the bible occasionally or if we don’t study it at all as then we will be going according to how our human heart directs instead of the ways God directs us, a part which often leads to destruction.

Today’s bible reading is a question and the answer is provided in the same verse to give clarity to His children so that if we ever find ourselves in a mess because we have chosen to lead our own path, we cannot fix it ourselves and cannot assume that we can atone for our misdeeds by offering sacrifices to God. The simple way to retrace our steps is to go back to God and His word, Through His word, we will be redirect to the right path. The word of God is all we need to live a live pleasing to God.
