Proverbs Challenge – Chapter 10

Wise Sayings of Solomon

10 The proverbs of Solomon:

A wise son makes a glad father,
But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing,
But righteousness delivers from death.
The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish,
But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

He who has a slack hand becomes poor,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
He who gathers in summer is a wise son;
He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.

Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
The memory of the righteous is blessed,
But the name of the wicked will rot.

The wise in heart will receive commands,
But [a]a prating fool will [b]fall.

He who walks with integrity walks securely,
But he who perverts his ways will become known.

10 He who winks with the eye causes trouble,
But a prating fool will fall.

11 The mouth of the righteous is a well of life,
But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

12 Hatred stirs up strife,
But love covers all sins.

13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding,
But a rod is for the back of him who [c]is devoid of understanding.

14 Wise people store up knowledge,
But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
The destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16 The labor of the righteous leads to life,
The wages of the wicked to sin.

17 He who keeps instruction is in the way of life,
But he who refuses correction [d]goes astray.

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips,
And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools die for lack of [e]wisdom.

22 The blessing of the Lord makes one rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it.

23 To do evil is like sport to a fool,
But a man of understanding has wisdom.
24 The fear of the wicked will come upon him,
And the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more,
But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
So is the lazy man to those who send him.

27 The fear of the Lord prolongs days,
But the years of the wicked will be shortened.
28 The hope of the righteous will be gladness,
But the expectation of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the Lord is strength for the upright,
But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

30 The righteous will never be removed,
But the wicked will not inhabit the [f]earth.
31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
But the perverse tongue will be cut out.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
But the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.

Proverbs 10:1, Children determine whether the parents are happy in their later years or not. A Christian parent would never be happy if their children are in the world, such parent would be happy to know that his or her children are all saved with their names written in the book of life. The mother feels the sadness of her child or children being unbelievers because her relationship with the children is more intimate.
Proverbs 10:2, Do not accumulate wealth on earth rather run after things that would give you treasures in heaven.
Proverbs 10:3, sometimes it may look like the wicked are getting what they want and the righteous aren’t. Remember that the ways of God are not the ways of man. He will always take care of his own.
Proverbs 10:4, Early to bed, early to rise. Get your priorities straight, work hard do the right thing at the right time and God will bless your hands. Laziness will get one nowhere.

Proverbs chapter 10 talks about the righteous and how they fear God, and doing things God’s way avoids a lot of needless pain and even possibly a premature death due to a dangerous, destructive lifestyle of evil. The righteous have joy in the depths of their hearts that brings them hope anew everyday thanks to the new mercies of God every morning. The wicked have no God to renew their strength and to show them compassion, for, in their vitriol against God, they incur His judgment. They love darkness and put their hope in the passing pleasures of sin, but their hope in sin as a means to satisfaction and life will fail. They will face God’s wrath when they die. Doing things God’s way is a protection for the righteous and a source of strength in which they draw confidence and hope. But because the wicked are at enmity with God, their iniquity will bring them eternal ruin.

  3. OJO ELIJAH

This proverb describes the general providence and provision of God in meeting the physical needs of His people .This truth does not deny that may be times when we will find it difficult to provide for the needs of ourselves or our families .Times of war ,famine, or devastating economic or social conditions ,as well as periods of persecution ,may result in severe hardship for the righteous nevertheless,God will never abandon His children who trust fully in Him.
All too often material wealth in this world is gained through wickedness and greed and is therefore not from God .True riches consist in the blessing of the Lord . Whether we are poor or rich ,the Lord ‘s presence and favour are our greatest wealth.

A mother feels sad when her offsprings are unbelievers because her relationship with the children is more intimate.
It is the joy of parents to see that their children are living in the way of the Lord.
Proverb 10:9 says He who walks with integrity walks securely,
But he who perverts his ways will become known. This is simply telling us as Christians to live our lives to please God cos whenever we do things right,it makes God happy but he who doesn’t make his path straight will never gain the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 10:12 says,Hatred stirs up strife,
But love covers all sin. God is love and wants us to grow in love. God doesn’t want us to hate one another but to always learn to forgive. Because of the Love God has for mankind,he sent his only begotten son to die on the cross and redeem us from our sins. So,as Christians, let’s always learn to love one another as God loves us.

Chapter 10 : this chapter made it known about wise discussion i.e A good man discourses wisely for the benefit of others. But it is the sin, and will be the ruin of a wicked man, that he speaks what is displeasing to God, and provoking to those he converses with. The righteous is kept by the power of God; and nothing shall be able to separate him from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.

Together, these proverbs are like a conversation. Imagine that a group of wise people are talking about wisdom. Each person in the group speaks briefly. They all listen to each other. Then, each person tells his thoughts or ideas to the other people. The conversation would be similar to this section of the Book of Proverbs.
Because of this structure, you cannot split these proverbs into smaller sections. Proverbs 10:1 to Proverbs 22:16 belong together. To help us to understand their meaning, I have separated the proverbs into smaller groups. (The chapter numbers are not part of the original book. Sometimes, they are in the wrong positions. Proverbs 22:17 should really start a new chapter.)
The proverbs describe our lives. Often, they describe good things in our lives, for example, wisdom. Sometimes they describe bad things. They do not always explain whether something is good or bad. You need to use your own wisdom to decide. For example, Proverbs 10:15 says, ‘Great wealth protects a rich man. Lack of wealth ruins a poor man.’ This does not mean that we should try to get great wealth. Proverbs 8:10 told us that wisdom was better than wealth. Proverbs 10:15 describes our lives. We should want wisdom more than we want wealth.
These proverbs discuss many different subjects. However, all these subjects start with the first proverb. This proverb is about the difference between a wise son and a foolish son. The difference is (of course) wisdom.

  11. Merayebu Joy Omowunmi

We see the joy or sorrow of parents. Most parents live the most part of their lives for their children. The children actually determine whether the parents are happy in their later years or not. There is not a more unhappy parent in the world than one who knows his or her child is caught up in sin and things of this world. There is no happier parent than one who knows that his or her offspring are all saved with their names written in the Lamb’s book of life. Children who are living for Jesus are a joy to any parent.

This grief is most deeply felt by the mother, who plays a more intimate role in raising a child.
