Revenge!

Look, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord delivered you today into my hand in the cave, and someone urged me to kill you. But my eye spared you, and I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 Moreover, my father, see! Yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the corner of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you. Yet you hunt my life to take it. 12 Let the Lord judge between you and me, and let the Lord avenge me on you. But my hand shall not be against you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand shall not be against you. 14 After whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? A dead dog? A flea? 15 Therefore let the Lord be judge, and judge between you and me, and see and plead my case, and deliver me out of your hand.”

Memory Verse: Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Romans 12:19

There is a common saying which goes “Revenge is a dish best served cold” and all it does is make me wonder why anyone would want to it makes me wonder what makes the server different from the offender? Many times in life we just want to pay back those who have hurt us, there is this sense of closure or comfort derived which makes one feel equal but is that really true? When people wrong us, it just feels like the only way to have peace is to see them suffer for what they have done to us and that those times we just keep wishing there was something we could do to hurt them in return. One question keeps going through our mind “Why should that individual get away with hurting me like this” and the thought just never leaves us because we either want them to agonize in return or want to show that we are not to be messed with.

The human in us keeps screaming Revenge! Revenge!! Revenge!!! and whiles it sounds very abnormal, it’s the only thing we will keep doing if we still allow our flesh to control things around us. Today’s bible text is one which calls the attention of every Christian to what to do in situations where the heart is beating for revenge. David had always been someone with the spirit of God and this is the reason he was chosen to be king over Israel from a very tender age. In this instance, anyone who had the opportunity to kill an enemy will do it without a blink but David thought about how his action will hurt God.

Yes, our actions can hurt God our father because instead of letting Him take the position of a Father, we deprive him of fighting our battles thinking our revenge will be nicer but David knew better hence he said to king Saul ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 1 Samuel 24:10. David respected the anointing of God overs Saul’s life and despite knowing Saul was out to kill him, he left the battle to God to fight for him.

As Christians, our battles belong to God and no matter how much hurt we may be going through, we are never to be too hurt to ignore the voice of the Holyspirit or deny God our Father the joy of fighting our battles for us. His word says in Exodus 14:14 “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”

God our father wants us to trust Him enough to leave the battle to Him.

Are you still planning your come back? why not go to the Lord like David did in Psalm 3:1

“Lord how they have increased who trouble me!Many are they who rise up against me.” Don’t make a mess of everything.

VENGEANCE IS THE WORKOF GOD; IT IS NOT YOUR WORK.
