Why Are You Still Afraid?

On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

Memory verse: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

Many things in this word threatens our peace of mind. If we start to number those things that makes us fearful, we will most possibly end up with an inexhaustive list and as much as it’s easy to say “I’m not afraid of anything”, when the unknown hits us, fear is activated because it is part if the natural human build triggered by the unforeseeable. What is the worst storm you have ever being through in life? Could it be in your past or are you still going through it?

Most times when we face these storms, we really become annoyed as it looks like God is sleeping and ignoring the situation that has taken over our lives. At this point the storm seem bigger and louder to the point we may not even hear the God’s voice when He calls out or speak. We find ourselves screaming at the top of our voices and applying every bit of energy trying to get ourselves out of the situation. Our minds become clouded with everything, questioning how God can be sleeping in a time like this. This was the same situation the disciples found themselves, they though Jesus did not care.

Jesus was on their boat while the storm raged but because He is not moved by the storm, His reaction was different to that of the disciples. Lessons learnt from this is that “God is with us even in the storm” and He confirmed this in His word according to Isaiah 43:2 where He promised “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.”

The disciples called the attention of Jesus to the storm because they were fearful but Jesus was at peace because He is Lord over all storms of life and knew they were safe and can be silenced even when they become tough. The idea to go on the boat trip came from Jesus so He knew what was ahead and most importantly they were in good hands, but the disciples forgot who was leading them, the needed to believe a little more.

If the Lord is on your boat then you nothing to be fearful of, He is leading so there is not even a 1% chance that you will sink when the storms arise. You can rest in faith no matter what faces you in life and irrespective of how much the devil tries to magnifies the negativities happening in the world, you have no reason to fear because your boat isn’t going down.

No matter what you do, make sure you don’t get on the boat alone without Jesus, only then are you guaranteed safety.
