“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.”
Many times we see people doing all sort of things they believe will warm their way to God’s heart and so they assume it’s ok to be with the world certain days of the week and come lift up holy hands on Sundays. The days of the week has thus been split into two brackets, Sunday afternoon to Saturday night which is for conforming to the world and then the Sunday morning which they spend in the Church. This ought not to be so.
Logically speaking, even without looking into the world of God, is it humanly possible to build a relationship with someone you spend a morning with a week? What do we really expect from such relationships? Same is what some of us do with God. The bible emphasis on “hearing, hearing again” : “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”Romans 10:17.
If we spend the majority of our days carnally conforming to the world and just Sunday mornings hear the word of God, we are living a lie by assuming that the sacrifices we give on Sunday mornings are sufficient to build and claim a relationship with God. The quality of our relationship is dependent on the time dedicated to God and not the time we spend apart.
Also if we spend our week Monday to Sunday attending various church functions and never spend time with God, then we never really get to know Him. Walking with God and working for God are two similar but parallel things. To truly know an individual, you practically have to spend private time with them not in the company of anyone. While it’s good to attend various religious events, we may also be impacting the quality of our relationship because can enjoy the presence of God but not know Him.
King David knew the Lord and the law. He also knew for there were no sacrifices suitable for the sins he committed therefore He went to the only one able to wash away sins completely – God.
God is more interested in a heart that is truly broken down for Him. A heart that genuinely seeks his face not because of what they desire from Him but for who He truly is. He is God our Father and He deserves to be placed as priority in our everyday lives because He does make us priority; the only important thing after Himself. “what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.” Psalms 8:4-5.
No amount of sacrifice is able to pave the way to Gods heart and doing extra activities or duties in church is not a substitute. So for a heart that loves and obeys God, beware of sacrifices.
