Ready for Your Assignment?

But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover, David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”  And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

Memory Verse: Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10

Many times we look at people around us with amazing appearances and desirable status and we say “He/she is just a very lucky person”; yet beneath those phrases are lots and lots of personal investment and grooming. Basically what we see is the finished good and not the process or rough edges, we tend to focus so much on end result and the big day celebration turning out so perfect, but we don’t seem to realise is that things turn our extremely successful due to commitment, perseverance and persistence. That was the story of David form being a boy until He became the King of Israel.

While the life of King David teaches us so many life lessons, one which we focus on today is David’s worth at the time Saul was evaluating Him. The people saw David’s appearance in stature and possibly experience and thought, this is a really small boy incapable of delivering the task ahead. Even the king made a very interesting statement when David approached him, Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” 1Samuel 17:33.

David however had an opportunity to respond to the king’s doubt about his ability by presenting his past victory and reassuring Saul that if he was to progress, he wasn’t going alone, he was going with God on his side and the king authorised the battle. David did not just go to the king saying I have God therefore I will win the battle but he went ready for the assignment so he had the right balance although not physically in terms of agility and size, but in terms of resource and spiritual backup, he was ready.

The word of God which guides our daily life reflects the heart of God and most times we see the blessings of God is not luck. He blesses the work of our hands but what has our hands find to do? Are we just there idle and expecting a miracle or are we actually finding something to engage ourselves in? While studying, I worked in the retail industry and by God’s grace developed through to management level. At that time, I was just doing it for sake of needing a job but little did I know that the experience I was acquiring from retail management was that which will help build and establish various aspect of my life today and equally adaptable to the future.

Although we may not have the big breakthrough we are after yet, lets continue to work on that which we have now, not with an attitude of just passing time but with diligence because God may be taking us through a development phase for the next big thing He has in plan for us just like we see in the life of David.

Though David was only shepherd boy, he was also building skills that helped him fight the great battle with Goliath and made him the most preferred individual in Israel to the point that even King Saul became envious of him.

God will take you places but you need to be assignment ready else you may just be delaying your next big move.
