But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.
Memory Verse: Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33
We worry too much, yes human beings have been created to depend and focus of God but the level of distractions and worries in this world are second to none. More often we think things ought to be so complicated to look authentic, so therefore we specialise in looking for unnecessary things which in turn makes our lives more difficult and then we run to God to solve a problem that was self-created, a problem that wasn’t there before.
The circle of the human lack of understanding of priorities is what makes even Christianity less attractive to unbelievers. I mean how can I truly be a follower of Christ and not understand those things that are truly important to Christ and focus on pursuing them? Why do we get confused about what truly pleases the Lord versus what truly pleases the world? Could it be genuinely said that we are confused or are we just enjoying pleasing the world because we see the results are tangible and the world can easily applaud us?
The life of a believer can be grouped into two categories like Mary and Martha the sisters of Lazarus. These two categories of believers have both opened their hearts to Jesus and welcomed Him into their lives as their Lord and personal savior. There are however various things being focused on by those two categories of believers; while some have the understanding of where their focus should be which is solely on the word of God and the treasures in it, the other category are a bit unstable with some distraction here are there, therefore they miss out on what’s truly important, mostly the opportunity of being guided by the word of God.
As earlier highlighted, one of the reasons why our lives sometimes do not reflect Christ’s is because we continually miss out on opportunities to gain full understanding of the word talk less of practicing and applying the teachings about Christ to our lives. We experience this shortfall because our focus is on the less important things.
We need to learn to know the difference between the good thing and the right thing. Some things are good, but are not right and these we can see in the life of Mary and Martha.
Being a category Martha is not a bad thing and doesn’t make you any less a Christian but just like everything in life, there are things that we cannot recover if we lose out on them and one of such is the opportunity to learn at the feet of Christ. Instead of Jesus giving Martha a pat on the back for her hospitality nature, He addressed her sense of priorities; Can you relate to that?
Your work for God should not be confused with your walk with God. The time for God cannot and should not be swapped with the time for activities and if you are still unable to give the Lord your undivided attention then you may still be missing out on the most important thing.
No amount of good works can make up for the time you should be spending with God. I pray the Lord will give us a sense of priority to balance our Walk and Work for Him in Jesus name. Amen
- Father I thank you for another wonderful day
- Forgive me of all my shortcomings O Lord and let your mercy prevail over judgement
- Help me from today Lord to focus on you and not be distracted
- In every way I have prioritized the pleasure of the word over you, have mercy O Lord
- Thank you Lord for answers to prayers, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.
