Thirst & Hunger No More!

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Memory Verse: I am the bread of life. John 6:48

There are so many televised programs in the western world especially in the entertainment industry with their favorite intermission commercials focused on charity adverts of Children starving in various African countries. If you are versatile with this, does it make you imagine what it feels like to be without food and or water? Of course it might not truly depict the true picture of African countries but there are some places with vast level of needs yet to be broadcasted.

While you may never have been in a position like that, there are people who live their everyday life not knowing where the meal for the day will come from and those people can fully explain what it means to be without meals. Better still, have you tried doing a dry fast with no food and water involved? While your body may get used to it after a while, you initially become weak on the first day and then gradually your physical energy level gets drained over the days until you become in cable of thinking straight or carry out energy required tasks. For a fit person, it’s definitely not a good time to get involved in any sort of exercise activities as you are most likely to end up in the Emergency Room. Ultimately the body begins to shut down daily and some people die in the process due to lack of nutrient.

The illustration above might look like an exaggeration but the facts remains about what could happen to an individual lacking the essentialities of life one of which is decent nutrition. Hunger kills quicker than most viruses we protect ourselves from, and as this applies to our physical wellbeing, so also is it an important flow when it comes to our spirit man.

In light of this, we see people running so much after the materials of life, leaving their spiritual lives unattended to. The thirst for physical things and the need to constantly refuel engages us so much that we only constantly focus on that which is perishable and ignore the most important things – Our spiritual nutrient which is a relationship development and continuous improvement with God.

Jesus had a very interesting conversation with the Samaritan woman by the well and somewhere during that conversation in John 4:13 He told the woman, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

The verse highlights the extent to which man has been built to continually hunt. Because the body has been assembled to take in and pass out waste, the body is never in a position to retain something more than a short while and as such we keep hunting and this hunt is a forever thing. We simply cannot satisfy our deepest longings; our needs are insatiable.

This can be likened to a restless style of living and there is an alternative to this. We have a choice not to hunger again and never thirst again and that’s only for those who accept the invitation of Jesus and believe in Him. Our acceptance of Jesus puts us in a position of satisfaction and fulfillment. There is completion and rest in life until we fix our spiritual life and Jesus is the only one able to give that level of rest.

We simply cannot survive without Jesus; we will not only die spiritually but physically we will continue to become a slave to the vanity of this world.

Jesus can and will satisfy our deepest needs and longing. We can basically live a life overflowing with blessing but we need and have to play our part of accepting Jesus genuinely, who indeed is the bread of life. He is always ready to welcome you to his table to dine with Him and quench that hunger and thirst once and for all.

The question which remain is, “will you chose to hunger and thirst no more?”
