Choosing Jesus Is Profitable!

So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Memory verse:  For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13

We all want to increase in various capacities, for a fact, I’m yet to meet any one who is not willing to profit in life. Using a google search engine to search the word “grow”, 1,330,000,000 results were returned in 0.50seconds. The world is constantly looking for growth formulas, motivational speakers are constantly giving nuggets on ways we can grow and authors have been able to sell millions of copies of their books so long as it has something to do with growth, increasing or financial stability. Undoubtedly, the world is in constant search on how to grow and continue growing to a level of independence and have something we can call security in every area of life. While all these are important, the vital question I want us to focus on this morning is “what does God have to say about growth”?

The best written books or most eloquent speakers in today’s world operates with the wisdom of this world and whiles most success formulas work for some, it simply might not work for others as a saying goes ‘what worked for Paul didn’t work for Apollos’ but the word of God is diverse and unique, it has amazing ways of being able to work for everyone. It is our only source of truth, the only path through which we can achieve God’s intention for our lives.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. this quote from Jeremiah 29:11 expresses the mind of God towards His children and God is clear on His thought and plans for us but often we find out that we still seem to always fail at various things most often because we are constantly looking for some sort of short cut or let’s call it a quick pass. Knowing the plan for God is one thing but working with God and patiently walking with Him to reach your destination of that future is another. It is important to be willing to do the walk as it remains one of the most important role to play in achieving success at anything in life.

The parable of the talents is one of the many beautiful parables told by Jesus while he was on earth and from this we see that God being the master knows our capacity and capabilities. This parable highlights the tragedy of wasted opportunities due to lack of faithfulness to that which we currently own. Our ability to grow as illustrated in this parable is based on how faithful we are in that which God has kept in our care.

Everything we currently own including our lives belongs to God. The bible tells us in Genesis 2:7 that God shared His breath with us to make us a living being therefore the breath we think we own is His and when we live our lives outside Him we cut short the source of our continuity . Any life that we live outside of God is deemed as unprofitable and will yield no result no matter how many inspirational books we read and motivational speakers we listen to.

God is the foundation of all and when we live the live He has given us trying to glorify Him then like the servant with five talents, He will add so much more as said in Matthew 6:33. Additional blessings such as eternal life and favor from God are not things which one can read about and work towards but something which God is able to give only by His mercy to those who do according to this will.

Are you still thinking of how to make good progress and profit in life? Our weak flesh and pursuit of the things of the world are our strongest enemy.  Focus on the things of God and see Him work out His goodness in all other areas of your life, all for your own good. Our growth comes from the choices we make and only the decision to follow Jesus will earn you the most fruitful and profitable life.
